Records Retention and Other Policies

The Center for the Assessment of Sign Language Interpretation, LLC (CASLI) is committed to protecting the privacy of our exam candidates and holding confidential all information related to our candidates, their exams, exam status, results, and score reports. CASLI and its contractors agree not to provide any unauthorized access to candidate information, not to compile personal information about the candidate for third-party use, and not to share any information about the candidate with any unauthorized persons or third parties. This information includes, but is not limited to: verification of candidate’s identification and/or personal information, test cycle expiration date, exam status (whether a candidate took an exam or not), exam appointment time, exam appointment location, any Americans with Disabilities accommodations requests or ADA accommodations provided, status of an exam results, results of an exam, a candidate’s score report, or any exam- or candidate-related information. While it is impossible to maintain 100% confidentiality, as members of the community may learn of a CASLI exam candidate taking a CASLI exam by seeing them first-hand at a physical test site, CASLI and its contractors otherwise agree to hold confidential any candidate information and agree not to share any of the aforementioned information without the expressed permission of CASLI, LLC or of the exam candidate themselves.

Candidates who wish to give permission for a third party to view their exam records may fill out this form and send it using the email address on file to testing@casli.org

RID and CASLI retains exam records indefinitely. These exam records include the candidate’s name, the candidate’s RID member number, the exam date, and the exam scores. Additional details such as score report (score breakdown per domain), areas of improvement, testing location, etc., may or may not be on file through the candidate’s RID member account or in their account in the CASLI Exam System. Video recordings of performance exams are only kept for one year for rating and appeals processes and then are deleted. Video recordings of performances exams are not shared with candidates for any reason. If a candidate takes an exam and fails, there is a required waiting period before they are able to attempt the same exam again. The retake only applies to the same retaking the same exam. (e.g. a candidate took and failed their CDI-Knowledge exam does not need to wait six months to take the CASLI Generalist Knowledge Exam).

These retake policies differ per exam.

  • If a candidate takes the CDI-Knowledge Exam and fails, they must wait six (6) months before they can retake the exam.
  • If a candidate takes the NIC-Knowledge Exam and fails, they must wait three (3) months before they can retake the exam.
  • If a candidate takes the NIC-Interview and Performance Exam and fails, they must wait six (6) months before they can retake the exam.
  • If a candidate takes the CASLI Generalist Knowledge and Ethical Decision Making and Cultural Responsiveness Exam and fails, they must wait three (3) months before they can retake one or both exams.
    • The candidate only needs to retake the part of the exam they failed. E.g.:
      • If the candidate passes the Fundamentals of Interpreting Multiple Choice Questions portion of the exam, but fails the Ethical Decision Making and Cultural Responsiveness Case Studies Portion of the exam, then they must wait three (3) months before they can return and retake ONLY the EDM/CR Case Studies Exam. 
      • If the candidate passes the Ethical Decision Making and Cultural Responsiveness Case Studies portion of the exam, but fails he Fundamentals of Interpreting Multiple Choice Questions Portion of the exam, then they must wait three (3) months before they can return and retake ONLY the Multiple Choice Questions portion of the exam.
    • If the candidate fails both the Fundamentals of Interpreting Multiple Choice Questions portion and the Ethical Decision Making and Cultural Responsiveness Case Studies portion of the exam, then they must wait three (3) months before they can retake BOTH the Multiple Choice Questions and Ethical Decision Making and Cultural Responsiveness Case Studies exams.
  • If the candidate has already passed their CDI-Knowledge or NIC-Knowledge, and takes the Ethical Decision Making and Cultural Responsiveness Case Studies Portion of the exam as their bridge exam to the new CASLI Generalist Performance Exam, and fails, they must wait three (3) months before they can retake that exam. They may proceed to take the CASLI Generalist Performance Exam but must retake and pass their bridge exam to satisfy all exam requirements for RID’s certification programs.
  • If a candidate takes the CASLI Generalist Performance Exam and fails, they must wait six (6) months before they can retake the exam.

EXCEPTIONS:

  • The ONLY exception to the policy for the required waiting period for exams retakes are exams that are being retaken as a result of an retake granted based on an appeal of the exam administration due to test site issues (e.g. environmental distractions) or technical issues (e.g. power outages) that occurred during the administration of the exam. Candidates must endeavor to retake their exams within 45 days from their original exam date.

Previously, the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf allowed candidates to purchase a once-in-a-lifetime, one year extension on their Testing Process Cycle. CASLI has ceased this practice and will not consider any requests for TPC extensions.

The first time an exam is purchased within the testing process cycle, it is listed at “first time” rate. In the event a candidate needs to retake that exam within this testing process cycle, the exam fee will be listed at a “retake” rate.

If the test process cycle expires before the candidate has met all eligibility requirements for their certification, then they must begin the process again and purchase their knowledge exam at the “first time” rate. Once a candidate passes their knowledge exam, their performance exam can be purchased at the “first time” rate.
