Hello, my name is Sean Furman, I am the CASLI Director of Testing & Certification
Hello, I’m Sachiko Flores, the President of the CASLI Board of Managers. We have exciting news to share with you!
Sean: First, as you may already know, Specialist Certificate: Legal (SC:L) has been under moratorium since 2016 causing a decline in the number of SC:L interpreters available to work within legal settings. One of the major challenges with reinstating the SC:L is finding the funding needed to develop current exams and assessments for the specialty certification program. RID has been exploring options and has asked CASLI to take on the effort in overseeing the process of reviving the SC:L including development and financial support towards this effort. As part of this project we have hired a Project Manager Sandra McClure, who brings enormous knowledge and experience within the legal interpreting field along with a strong passion for this project.
Sachiko: Not only that, CASLI recognizes the challenges in securing funds and are eager to get the ball rolling on this. For these reasons, CASLI Board of Managers have approved to invest $60K toward this project. The $60K is primarily for conducting the Job Task Analysis (JTA) which defines the specialty work – all knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA’s) required for interpreting in legal settings and is the first step in consideration for an assessment for an SC:L certification program.
Sean: CASLI will be working with a psychometrician team and Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) for the JTA to identify the design of assessment needed for the future SC:L. We’re doing this with the intent of developing some type of assessment product that would allow one to achieve a credential for interpreting in legal settings.
Currently, we do not have all of the details of what that assessment might look like as we are still in the preliminary stages. Nevertheless, we are truly excited to be supporting this important work.
Sachiko: We need your support with this effort. We are looking for funding for this project: investors and those who can offer financial support for this as we anticipate the cost of developing SC:L assessment testing to be approximately three quarters of a million dollars. This requires support from the community by way of networking, knowledge and connections to stakeholders who will invest in expanding the pool of legal American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters to ensure qualified and optimal communication access is available for Deaf consumers and others involved in the legal system.
